Catnip: the magical herb for cats and people

Kattenkruid: het magische kruid voor katten én mensen - Diergigant

Your cat sees a speck of green in the corner of the room and suddenly turns into a whirlwind of spins, rolls, and meows. The secret? Catnip, also known as Nepeta cataria. This little herb contains nepetalactone, a substance that stimulates the scent receptors at the back of your cat's nose and can cause an almost hallucinogenic effect.

The reactions are fascinating to watch. Some cats become euphoric and energetic, roll on the floor, rub against everything loose and fixed, purr like a turbine, and almost seem to "laugh." Other cats become relaxed and sluggish, as if having a mini spa moment. A funny detail: during all this, your cat may raise its lip in a behavior called 'flehmen,' allowing it to better perceive scents.

The great thing is: catnip is completely safe. Your cat cannot overdose on it; once the effects wear off, the playful behavior stops on its own. But not every cat is sensitive to this green wonder. Kittens younger than eight weeks usually do not react, and some adult cats simply lack the receptors genetically to feel the effect.

And the good news? Catnip isn't just a party for cats. For people, it can have a calming effect, for example in a cup of herbal tea. Additionally, it is a natural mosquito repellent powerhouse: the scent effectively keeps mosquitoes away, up to ten times better than some commercial products.

In short: a little catnip can bring great joy – for your cat and sometimes for yourself. It is a smart, safe, and versatile herb that makes your pet's life a little happier.
