The sun is shining again, the days are getting longer… and your pet? They’re happily enjoying it with you! But every season has its points of attention. With a few smart checks, you can ensure your four-legged friend stays safe and happy.
🌸 Spring: a fresh start
Nature comes to life, and unfortunately so do fleas and ticks. So start protection on time. This also applies to cats who only roam around the garden. Think of good flea and tick drops, a collar, or even a chewable tablet.
Your pet is also shedding its winter coat, so a good brushing is not a luxury (and it also means less hair around the house 😉). A nice slicker brush is a great tool for this.
During walks, watch out: some spring flowers, like daffodils and lilies, are toxic. And if you see itching or sneezing? One of my own cats is sensitive to this.
☀️ Summer: enjoy with care
Warm weather = extra caution. Always provide shade and fresh water and avoid exertion during the hottest times of the day.
Important: never leave your pet in the car. Really, not even “just for a moment”!!
The temperature in a parked car when it’s 24°C outside rises to 43°C within 30 minutes, and in hot summers even above 50°C.
Cats and dogs can’t sweat like we humans do. They only lose heat by panting and through their paw pads. This is impossible in an overheated car.
Parking briefly in the shade, window slightly open—this has no effect on the heat inside the car. There is no excuse to leave your pet in there, not even for 5 minutes. Please spread this message. Every summer pets die from overheating in cars.
If you see your pet overheating and it’s in life-threatening danger, call 144 (Netherlands) or 101 (Belgium). You are allowed to break the window if emergency services are too late. Be sure to take a photo or video as proof beforehand.
First aid: Remove the animal from the car and cool it gently with lukewarm water on the head, ears, neck, and paws. No ice-cold water, as this causes shock.
- Also check the ground—hot asphalt can burn paws. And if you’re heading to water, always supervise, because not every dog is a great swimmer.
💡 Smart extra tips
-
Place multiple water bowls
-
Use a cooling mat or shaded spot if needed
-
Be careful with grass clippings
-
Watch out for wasps and bees
🚨 When action is needed
If your pet is panting heavily, lethargic, or vomiting, contact the vet immediately.
In short: with a little extra attention, you can make spring and summer one big celebration—for you and your pet. 🐶🐱
