Warm through the Winter: this is how your Pet stays Healthy and Happy

Warm door de Winter: zo blijft je Huisdier Gezond en Gelukkig - Diergigant

When the days get shorter and the cold slowly creeps into the house, not only do we notice that winter has begun. Our pets feel the change too. They can't tell us, but with a little attention, warmth, and structure, you can easily help them through the cold months. Winter care is not about big interventions, but about smart, loving details ❄️

Extra care in winter: small gesture, big effect

Cold, drafts, and road salt are the silent spoilers of winter. By protecting your pet against these, keeping their paws clean and dry, and ensuring enough exercise and daylight, you lay a solid foundation. And yes, animals can get a winter slump too — a daily dose of play, attention, and light really makes a difference.

🐕 Dogs: warm, safe, and active

Coat & clothing
Not every dog is a snow king. Dogs with a short or thin coat benefit from a well-fitting jacket. Has your dog been rained on or run through the snow? Then make sure the coat is thoroughly dry before they rest. Wet cold is the fastest way to cooling down.

Paw care
Road salt can irritate paw pads and even cause wounds. By applying petroleum jelly to the paws before the walk and rinsing them afterward with lukewarm water, you prevent a lot of discomfort. You can also trim the hair between the toes to reduce snow and ice buildup.

Eating snow
For some dogs irresistible, but eating snow can cause stomach issues. A little attention during the walk prevents trouble later.

Walking & play
In severe cold, shorter walks are often better, but exercise remains important. Make it cozy with games indoors or an active walk, even if it’s already dark outside. Exercise keeps both body and mood balanced.

🐈 Cats: comfort and safety

Always able to come inside
In winter, always give cats the option to come inside themselves, for example through a cat flap. This way they don’t have to wait in the cold.

Knock first
Cats like to find warm spots — including under the hood of a car. Knocking before you drive off can literally save lives.

Warm indoor spot
A sunny windowsill or a soft spot near the window is ideal. Daylight and warmth help cats stay active and content during the dark months.

🐰🐹🐦🐍 General winter tips for other animals

  • Rabbits & guinea pigs
Adult rabbits can overwinter outside just fine. Guinea pigs are more sensitive to cold and feel better at 18–21°C.

  • Birds
Drafts and moisture are their biggest enemies. Provide a dry, sheltered environment.

  • Reptiles
Some species undergo a form of hibernation. Make sure to find out exactly what your animal needs.

  • Pond fish
A pond with sufficient depth (at least 80 cm) helps them safely get through the winter.

  • Sick animals
They have extra difficulty maintaining their body temperature and deserve extra attention and warmth.

What you should especially remember ❤️

  • Protect against drafts – drafts are deadly for every animal.

  • Be sensible with feeding – overfeeding is rarely necessary.

  • Watch out for road salt – cleaning and protection prevent painful paws.

With a little extra care, warmth, and attention, you make winter a safe and pleasant time for your pets. And let’s be honest: a content animal curled up in a warm spot is the most beautiful winter image there is, isn’t it? 🐾
