Instructions

First choose the right size. Slide your thumb and index finger into the fingerling and make a tweezers shape with the tip of your thumb and index finger. With your other hand, push up a few hairs from the coat using your fingers or a brush. Now you can clearly see the ends of the hair standing up. Hold your hand just above where you pushed the hair up and gently grasp the skin. Then grasp the ends of the hair firmly between your thumb and index finger and pull in the direction of hair growth. Only pull out a few hairs at a time. 

Note: In principle, picking should not hurt the dog. When the hairs are ready to come out, you're essentially just pulling out dead hairs. So this should be easy.
